It’s that time of the year when, as a freelance music photographer, you have to seriously consider the pros & cons of leaving the warmth and comfort of your house to cover a gig which may or may not be worth your while, but where there’s always the never-failing ‘guarantee’ that someone would like to review the show ‘with your images, but will give you a credit!!‘. If this was any other gig, I may have skipped it as a hassle, but this being The Roots, well, it’s normally worth the trip. As for John Legend, I’ve never been a fan of his work, but on this occasion, who’d have ‘thunked it’: the dude can actually sing, AND with no Kanye in sight:
Blackthought & ?uestlove:
So, these two musical entities have decided to collaborate on a new album called ‘Wake Up!‘, which has a selection of classic soulful tunes from the 60’s & 70s by musical greats such as Marvin Gaye, Nina Simone, Baby Huey & the Babysitters, and Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, to mention a few. Since I only got to hear 2 and half songs from the music set which included ‘Hard Times‘ and ‘Wake up Everybody‘, I think it’s safe to say that travelling in that cold was worth the trip. Good gig. Even security at the HMV Apollo was civil and nice…for a change.

That’s it for the night. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to acquint myself with layers of duvet and a nice hot water-bottle!
