Today is an official day to be ripped off! Some marketing geniuses decided, planned and sweetly executed a nefarious scheme all under the guise of Love! Yeah, you know what day it is: ‘Valentine’s day. Apparently it’s the one day of the year that you declare your undying love to the one you care for with either buying inflated priced roses, dinners, perfumes and such. Guys, take it from me: This is NOT your day! Be under no illusions whatsoever. It’s the day when you pamper your madam. If you get anything from her in return, just be thankful. Woe betide you, though, if you don’t even acknowledge her with even a card. I’m not a cynic of love, but I just don’t buy into this gimmick per se. (May I just take this moment to shout out to the missus… she knows where she is at the moment.. 🙂 and thank you so much for the card & gift x)
So Valentine’s Day…an occasion of pure exhibitionism of ‘love’ made manifest on a particular day. Think about it: 365 days (or 366 if you really want to be pedantic!) and you reckon you should show your love just on one day in full force? Not that I’m assuming that everyone does, but you’ll be suprised.
I’ve been asked time and time again, “Yo, Ak! what is love?” Well, that can range from a number of things, and in no particular order: From having a camera and just snapping away, to sparring, making quality time for the missus. Or just reading comics. But is that really love? The term love in my opinion has become a trivial concept to many. I’m no Cassanova, but when I think about love, I draw inspiration from 1 Corinthians 13. If you have a moment, have a read of this.
So, no matter what you do today, show some love. Doesn’t even have to be to someone you know. And if you’re single, and that silly thought of “All by myself!!” tries to creep in and make you feel sorry for yourself, put a stop to it with you knowing that at least you love yourself. Oh, and please, guys, for the love of God: don’t break the bank just for this one day!! If the missus really loves you, she’ll understand. But at least get her something!!
I’m going to leave you all with a passage I read today in ‘Our Daily Bread’, and I never saw this verse from this perspective before:
For God so loVed the world,
That He gAve
Believes In Him
Should Not perish,
But have Everlasting life.
